How My Relationship Loves Sobriety

First off, my husband and I have always had a pretty great relationship but it got even better in sobriety.

Mike never drank that much but when I was drinking he drank more because I can be very persuasive and alcohol generally likes company.Β My sobriety now has both of us opting for a healthy mocktail or Pukka tea and we are feeling pretty bloody smug, lemme tell ya! There’s back slapping a plenty in our house.

This clarity and sense of well being has brought us closer. Don’t get me wrong, we have always been close but I don’t think either of us realised how alcohol had become an intrinsic part of our ‘time out’ together.

It’s always been a challenge to find a way to switch off from being business partners, working in the studio together all day, to becoming …. just partners. I think we both fell into the habit of a beer or glass of wine to delineate the day from the evening. I call it power relaxing. It’s like, go, go, go! Relaaaaax!!

An old relationship feels new again!

Without out that habit we have had to make a conscious effort with each other, which has been a bit like meeting for the first time. That’s pretty special after 20 years together.

Now, I know not everyone has a Mike in their lives and some relationships will be made worse without alcohol but in those cases it’s probably meant to be. If alcohol was masking issues in your relationship then living without it will show the cracks. Embrace the cracks and allow life to unfold. For the first time in your life you may be seeing what’s real and what’s not.
